Whats the best GPS
05. Mar 2008 at 11:50

We borrowed our sons Tom Tom and I always said I woundnt bother with one because I can navigate anyhow.  IT WAS GOOD. We didnt have any squabbles about me not reading the directions right I have to have glasses on to look at the map and glasses off to look at the road signs.  I usually download directions and work from these.

So we will be getting one.  So whats the best one and where can I get one cheap (when funds allow).

No idea I'm afraid. I've always believed that Tom Tom is the best, we were given a cheap Navman from Argos as a present and it failed after 1 year. Why not google the question? Maybe there will be a Which? guide to the best.

I love satnav's

the price goes up depending on features. so if just want to nav around the uk, get the One.

Tesco keep having offers for a free one or £100 if you take out their car insurance.

more money more features -
EU maps
music player
phone calls via bluetooth (links to your own mobile for hands free)

etc

garmin are also impressive, seem to have far more back roads.

Mr C has a problem with spatial awareness and directions (plus lots of other embarrassing things, like remembering people's names  Undecided). He can barely get himself across the town and we've lived here for 7 years! Street names? - forget it.

Sat Nav is an absolute godsend for him.

I went to France last year, me with load of kids in car and Mrs NewStu in car with her brother loaded with SatNav. he had been to the holiday place in southern France before, I had not.

Loaded kids up (age 11 to 14) with map and told them they were KidNav. Got there hours before the SatNav car, as rather than rely on known route, he used non-existant roads to endlessly travel around Tours.

But yes, I now want one of those shiny things. hm, some rersearch required before go on holiday this year.

On the down side, the kids cost more to maintain than the SatNav used   Undecided

Garmin and Tom Tom seem to be the equivalent of Canon and Nikon.. which ever you have is the best!  My fiance has a Tom Tom (520 I think) which is ace.. I 'borrow' it whenever I'm going somewhere odd.. a colleague at work has a Garmin though and swears by it.. he knows about stuff as well!
