SO - Help please
19. Dec 2008 at 10:48

Hi,

I have done my SOA as I have just had a payrise, and I think I am finally in a position to start looking at my debts, rather than hiding from them.

I live with my partner, so the rent amount covers the mortgage and utilites etc as I pay this amount to him each month.

Any help as to the best POA would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Lisa

Hi Lisa and welcome to the site? Did you save your SOA when using the calculator? If so, is there any chance you could reload it and then use the format for "Make Sense" button rather than "Motley Fool". That way it should format much more neatly when pasted into here. Smiley

If you haven't saved it, don't worry, we'll work on the above.

with over £400 a month spare - where do you feel you are most worried about, is it stressful worrying about the debts you have, or do you need to review your spending as in reality you don't find £400 in your bank come next pay day?

If you dont have the £400 - try and keep a diary for a month and jot down everything you spend, every cashpoint visits etc, and tot it up in categories. you might find a particular habit is getting far more spent on it than you realise, and this  in turn helps you achieve more left over money that you can target a loan or credit card with.

are you still spending on the credit cards for example? if so, you need to update the SOA and declare what it is you are spending on.

with a strict month or two, you can quickly clear your barclays card and free yourself a further £25 a month for example.

I think its very difficult to do an accurate SOA without doing this.. I started making a note of all my money outs back in April and it was so useful I have continued.. once you get used to it, it really doesn't take more than a couple of minutes a day but it will really open your eyes to what you are spending - I had over £100 a week going out on stuff that wasn't food/household, petrol or bills.. and you quickly realise how fast that adds up!
